Bistriţa

History

Written documents confirm Bistriţa as a town as early as 1264, a period in which medieval Saxon colonists left their mark upon this town, contributing not only to its genesis, but also to its evolution and physical characteristics. While Bistriţa may owe its swift development to the abundance of natural resources in the area, it has also enjoyed a favourable political and socio-economic climate consisting of the
emancipation of the colonists from the Hungarian Crown, of the German urban legislation and the quality as well as the culture of people settled in this area.

Purpose

To offer a model of good practice for the restoration and rehabilitation of Bistriţa’s historical quarter, as well as to advise the local authorities with regard to the completion of the suggested project.
