History
On the territory of present-day Craiova, archaeologists found traces of civilisation dating from the Neolithic period, while the period of the Roman conquest left traces of the Roman Castro erected here, as well as of what is known as “Novac’s clod”. The first documentary attestation of Craiova appeared in 1475, in a charter of the ruler Laiota Basarab. At the end of the 15th century the Bănia instition moved to Craiova from Strehaia. This institution which was significant for the medieval history of Tara Românească existed until 1831, when it was abrogated.
