History


The Municipality of Miercurea Ciuc is the capital of Harghita county. The first known authentic document which attests the existence of the town as “ a town of the plain” is the privilege letter released by Queen Isabella, the mother of János Zsigmond, the Prince of Transylvania, on August 5th 1558.
 

Purpose
 

To offer a model of good practice for the commencement of a more ambitious programme of rehabilitation and revitalisation of the historical area of the Mikó citadel, in Miercurea Ciuc.


 

Mikó Citadel

Mikó Citadel OBJECTIVES (Cooperation with Ministry of Regional Development and Housing) The Citadel is the most important monument in town, situated in the old administrative centre. It was built between 1623-1631 in a Neo-Renaissance style by Count Hidvégi Mikó Ferenc. It had gained the status of border citadel and had a crucial role in defending Transylvania against enemy troops which entered through Pasul Ghimesului.
