History
The first traces of civilisation date from the Paleolithic period, while the first documentary attestation of the place, then known as Hermannstadt, can be traced to 1223. The medieval period of Sibiu was chararcterised by a constant economical development due to the ascension of guilds, whose products were sold throughout Transylvania as well as on the markets of several towns in Hungary. Sibiu was one of the most important and flourishing cities in Transylvania, being the centre of the Transylvanian Saxons established in the area.
When Transylvania was occupied by the Habsburgs, Sibiu became, for the following century, the capital of the Principality. The Habsburgic period in Sibiu’s history brought about important modern elements of architecture and consequently Sibiu’s old image of a medieval Citadel was replaced by that of a modern city, full of edifices built in the Viennese Baroque style.
