History
The town was founded by German colonists, who had been invited to settle in Transylvania by the Hungarian king, Geza II, to defend the Eastern borders. The first citadel was built around 1280 on the top plateau, serving as a refuge for those living at the bottom of the plateau. The 14th century witnessed the settlement on the bottom plateau of numerous craftsmen who, by 1376, were organised into guilds. Great financial efforts were required for the building of this defence base and thus, this led to the Sighisoara Citadel to be considered one of the most difficult to conquer.
